Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) V Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
An SCR-equipped truck produces less of the greenhouse gas, CO2.
- It uses less fuel.
- It doesn’t require a special engine oil to cope with increased engine temperatures.
- It will have a longer engine life.
- And you won’t need to drain and change oil as frequently.
The bottom line is that SCR is cleaner, greener and more fuel-efficient. Your SCR equipped UD truck will run cooler, last longer, and deliver lower maintenance costs.
What is SCR?
A UD SCR engine uses ultra high pressure fuel injectors that can vary the quantity of fuel injected into the cylinder, as well as the timing. Controlled by an Engine Management System or EMS, this maximises combustion efficiency and minimises fuel consumption. Literally, you get more bang for your buck.
This more efficient combustion process also produces more Nitrous Oxides (NOx). It is here that SCR works for you. In the catalytic converter, the SCR technology injects the AdBlue solution to create a chemical reaction that cleans the exhaust of NOx.
AdBlue is injected into the catalytic converter. At exhaust temperatures above 200 degrees celsius, a chemical reaction occurs that converts AdBlue into ammonia. The NOx reacts with the ammonia and decomposes, leaving only nitrogen and water (H2O). This is why AdBlue-equipped trucks may be seen venting a white gas. It’s water vapour - steam!
Approximately 95% of the NOx is converted to nitrogen and water, which are both naturally occurring elements in our world. Hence UD’s Euro 5 range of trucks are ECOFleet trucks. They really do save money and the earth.
